@mandy @33MHz @jacobrealo This chart explains the differences well. @doctorlinguist will attest to my incredulity at what is variously labelled cappuccino, latte and flat white in the US. A cappuccino has a thick layer of foam and a dusting of chocolate powder on top. A latte has 'textured' milk (i.e. the steamed milk transitions to foam on a gradient). A flat white is made with steamed milk and no foam. All of them are built on a shot of full bodied espresso. :)

@33MHz traditions dry cap(a.k.a lots of airy foam from hot milk) or regularly steamed milk? Also note that a cappuccino is espresso with steamed milk that is 5-8oz.
@33MHz history lesson: the “flat white” is claimed to be Antipodean (from Australia or New Zealand) [sprudge.com]. Also a debate on the name for said drink. Starbucks however never has made anything close to what many call “flat white” either.

@doctorlinguist I only mentioned flat white because it is interchangeable nomenclature for cappuccino these days. Often you ask for a cap you get a flat white.

@jacobrealo I can see getting fussy about the size and amount of espresso, but foaminess just doesn't seem that important, from my POV as a consumer. @doctorlinguist @goldenskye @33MHz
@mandy we get fussy about the amount of milk. The Specialty Coffee Association (which now represents the industry globally) has set standards for what a espresso shot should be: single, double and triple [scanews.coffee].

@goldenskye if you want a unique cafe, The Coffee Collective in Copenhagen (not sure if the other locations have this) a food menu that the chef pairs with the coffee and even uses coffee as a ingredient.
