@33MHz Not Long after our visit, National Geographic did a special on Asian elephants that Lek appeared in. The Thai government was angry about how it revealed the poor treatment of elephants —thinking it would hurt tourism— and subsequently put a price on Lek’s head. A Thai princess eventually got it removed, as I recall. The young elephant we adopted was poisoned during this time, and Lek had to move her elephant preserve off the government land it was previously on.
