Remember the Heroes
25 years ago, I, my wife, and her parents were in Gatlinberg eating breakfast in a restaurant on vacation. Things started out well, but the server had stopped coming. I got up initially to look for a water pitcher but walked into the restaurant’s bar, where people had begun gathering around the bar’s two TVs.
The televisions were showing one of the towers of the World Trade Center smoking, and the reporter was saying that a plane had hit the tower.
What the heck? A freak accident? Of all the places for a plane to crash…
I turned back to tell the others, but we saw the second plane hit the second tower live. No. Not an accident. An attack.
I don’t remember too much more other than we went to the hotel room in Pigeon Forge and we prayed. I then thought about one of my coworkers who was training in Norway. His flight had been delayed for a couple of days, thankfully saving him from joining the cast of Come From Away. 🙂 He made it home safely.
Thousands of people died. Untold others were saved, through the acts of New York and DC emergency personnel and a heroic group of passengers led by Todd Beaman crashing a commandeered plane in Shanksville, PA.
We made a promise to never forget. I admit not remembering much else from that day, other than a reminder of absolute evil followed by tales of ultimate heroism. Remember the heroes. Emulate them instead of the evil ones.
