Witnessed
Yesterday I went to Cincy to get my daughter for Spring Break. I was southbound on 71, a fairly straight portion south of Kenwood Mall. Traffic was going pretty fast even in the downpour. I was in the rightmost lane.
A blue SUV, boxy like a Jeep or a Range Rover, hit its brakes about 250’ ahead of me (about 3 seconds reaction time at 55 mph). I immediately slowed down a LOT, under control, and watched as the SUV hit some water streaming across the highway and slid off out of control onto the shoulder. I thought he was fairly lucky because there was a semi next to me in the lane on my left.
Until the SUV overcorrected. He spun back into my lane and further, now reversed, and put his passenger headlight in the semi’s lane. I couldn’t see if the SUV had someone in the passenger seat.
The semi, which couldn’t slow down as much as I did, hit him. Wham. Fortunately for me, the SUV caromed only slightly back into my lane as the now joined mass slowed down, and I could pass carefully on the right and shoulder. The traffic stacked up behind me as I carried on.
